Gas & Grit
An American Original
The name itself is a tribute to the pioneers of the past – the fearless men and women who pushed the boundaries of speed and innovation with nothing but their wits and determination. “Gas” evokes the heady scent of high-octane fuel, the lifeblood of a generation of racers who lived for the thrill of the open road. “Grit” embodies the unyielding spirit of those who dared to chase their dreams, no matter the obstacles they faced.
With a reverence for the past and a passion for craftsmanship, Tom set out to create a clothing line that captured the essence of early American motorsports. Each piece is a labor of love, meticulously designed to evoke the timeless elegance and rugged charm of a bygone era. From distressed graphic designs to vintage-inspired photos adorned with retro logos, every garment bears the unmistakable imprint of his devotion to the culture left behind.
But “Gas and Grit” is more than just a clothing line; it is a living tribute to the men and women who lived and breathed the spirit of motorsports. It is a celebration of camaraderie, adventure, and the thrill of the open road. It is a reminder that while times may change, the spirit of innovation and the love of the ride will always endure.
As word spreads and enthusiasts from far and wide flock to embrace the nostalgia of “Gas and Grit,” it will become more than just a brand – it will become a movement. From the dusty back roads of small-town America to the bustling streets of urban metropolises, people will soon embraced the ethos of “Gas and Grit,” drawn together by their shared love of vintage designs and the freedom of the open road.
Today, as “Gas and Grit” inspires a new generation of adventurers and dreamers, it stands as a testament to the enduring power of early American ingenuity and the timeless allure of motorsports. And as long as there are those who dare to chase their dreams with the same passion and determination as those who came before them, the spirit of “Gas and Grit” will live on.
Tom Atencio, Founder
Taught screen printing by famous Surf Artist Ken Auster of Laguna Beach, CA. Tom Atencio began printing t-shirts at the age of 15 years old. During that time, the Auster Studio was a few doors down from the then, startup clothing brand Stüssy, from time to time Shawn Stüssy would ask Tom to print up sample tees for him and encouraged Tom to create one of a kind custom t-shirt’s for himself. Thus, began Tom’s love of t-shirts and t-shirt graphics. Tom has dedicated his life to designing screen printed t-shirts and textile screen printing. Now, he’s happy to introduce his new venture with Gas & Grit.
Tom Atencio has also been riding motorcycles since he was 10 years old, first riding dirt bikes then street bikes and he then ultimately fell in love with cruisers. Tom has always had fond memories of riding his uncles military green Harley Davidson and has now become obsessed with vintage motorcycles from around the world, including motorcycles such as Indian, Harley Davidson, BSA, Panther Triumph, MotoGuzzi, BMW, and Vincent Motorcycles to name a few.
